For shots in front of the body on the backhand side, the thumb should be placed on the back of the racket handle as shown.

This grip is sometimes referred to as the ‘thumb’ grip. Having the thumb on the back of the racket enables greater control of shots.

The grip should be relaxed during shot preparation, and then squeezed on impact with the shuttle for control and generation of power.
