The base is often interpreted as a central position on the court and you will hear coaches telling players to get back to base between shots.

This can be misleading, as it is unrealistic to expect players to get back to the centre of the court between every shot.

The base in badminton should be considered as the ready position a player takes up between shots to be best prepared for the opponents following shot.

This position is dependant on the shot you have played and the flight time of the shuttle.
Whatever shot you play, you should always look to recover and get ready for the next shot from your opponent.
