If you do not perform the lunge correctly then you are in danger of injuring yourself due to prolonged stress on the joints. A good lunge ensures that your muscles rather than your joints absorb the movement forces.
Here are some key points to remember to help you perform a good lunge:
The foot should point in the direction of the lunge. For example if you are lunging to the forehand forecourt from base, then the lunging leg will step out and point diagonally.
Contact should be made heel then toe.
The knee should be in alignment with the foot and should not travel beyond the foot.
The lower you make impact with the shuttle, the deeper your lunge should be.
When lunging at speed the back leg should be used as a brake and for balance. It should point outwards, so the inside of the foot drags along the floor.
Use your leg and gluteal muscles to push back and recover from the shot as your trunk still needs to be stable.
