From the ready position, to generate momentum and push off quickly you will see players use a split step or widening of the base to generate movement.

The split step loads the legs so they can create the force required to move off.

Timing of the split step is important and should happen just after your opponent makes contact with the shuttle.

You should push into the floor in one direction to create a movement force in the opposite direction. This is in concurrence with Newton’s 3rd law – to every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
