Badminton shuttles can be bought in different speeds to suit the playing conditions or your ability. The speed is usually marked on or near the shuttle tube base.
Speeds range from 77-79 for most brands or 2-5 for Yonex shuttles. The lower number, the slower the shuttle speed – therefore 77 is classed as a slow shuttle and 79 a fast shuttle.
Temperature, humidity and atmospheric pressure all affect the flying speed of a shuttle. If you are playing in a cold hall then this will reduce the speed of the shuttle.
Did you know that feather shuttles should ideally be stored in a cool, slightly damp place such as a garage? Exposure to heat or low humidity can quickly reduce the moisture and natural oil content in the feathers, making them dry and brittle with a shorter playing life.
