In May 2006, the International Badminton Federation changed the rules for scoring in badminton. This was immediately introduced for international competitions and many domestic competitions and in time is likely to be introduced to club play.

The point a rally scoring system can be summarised as follows:

• A match consists of the best of 3 games to 21 points.
• The side winning a rally adds a point to its score regardless of who is serving.
