In preparation for the smash it is essential that your feet move first rather than the upper body.
This will enable you to get into the correct hitting position in balance behind the shuttle, and thus allow you to move forward into the smash.
Here we have a basic exercise for you to practice that is designed to develop movement timing and to give you the understanding of how the feet move when in position for the smash.
As you can see a right-handed player is getting into a left-right-left-right rhythm. The left–handed player’s rhythm is right-left-right-left. Note how the feet positions are exchanged during the movement.
This is a great warm-up exercise for you at the start of your playing session.
