The shuttle can be kept flat and tight across the net by using a simple pushing action.

Approach the net with the racket up to take the shuttle as high as possible.
Push through the shuttle and look to be ready for any reply shot.

At the higher level, you will see players using a slight chopping or slicing action to make their net play more effective.

By chopping the shuttle, it will die quicker as it crosses the net, making it more difficult for the opponent to attack the shuttle.
