Generally in singles, players hit to the corners of the court to keep the opponent under movement pressure and make them move longer distances. However when you are under pressure you should give yourself margin for error and keep clear of the lines.

Chen Jin, in yellow, demonstrates here a high lift to the centre of the court to minimise the chance of his shot going out. Jonassen also uses the centre of the court to play a safe net shot.

Players are used to practicing shots from the corners so a shot to the centre may produce an unforced error.
